Why did the compression sleeve become such a familiar sight in the NBA? This episode follows that question through Allen Iverson’s life and into the relationship between sport, style, and identity.
His story brings questions of race and respectability into focus: whose self-expression is celebrated, whose is scrutinized, and how those expectations play out on the basketball court.

A producer’s note
Allen Iverson was one of my favorite players growing up. I loved the fearless, relentless way he played and his confidence. He didn’t seem to live his life according to other people’s rules. For someone like me, who grew up in a household and community with strict rules, that was inspiring. I pitched this episode to the BBC/99PI team hoping they would see how Iverson’s attitude and the sleeve that still symbolizes it today changed basketball culture forever. They did!
I produced this episode to introduce Allen Iverson to listeners who may not know much about him and to create a sense of nostalgic immersion for those who remember watching him play. Does that make me an Unc? Yes. Certified. I hope you enjoy the feel and sound of this episode.
